    – Beautiful pattern!- Mat is soft, and actually has a surprising amount of grip (the instructions say you can wet the mat with a damp cloth for added grip, but I’ve only been trying it dry in my practice), though not quite as much as a sticky mat. I’ve used it in my personal practice and in a couple practice teaching classes (yoga teacher in training) in non-hot yoga settings, and it works nicely for the most part.- Could potentially use the mat reversibly (since there’s a regular sticky mat on the back), though probably only on carpet, so the mat doesn’t slip on the towel side down.- Also a bit more cushiony than many mats, so would be a nice mat to layer on bottom of another sticky mat for padding, or have as a softer mat to fold on top of another mat for certain poses.- Label says the mat is machine washable (though I question whether it’s a good thing to put a mat in a washing machine for wear & tear, or whether simply spraying it down with a hose & hanging it to dry could also work just as well & not create durability issues).Cons:- Like I said above, has a slight bit less grip than a regular sticky mat. Not enough to be a deal breaker, but a good sticky mat goes a long way (though I see the appeal in a hot yoga class).- I would also be concerned about cleaning the mat after it gets really wet from sweat in hot yoga. Bring machine washable seems questionable, though I haven’t tried it, so I don’t know how well it works.- Mat attracts hair easily, especially if you practice at home with a pet in the house.- A strap with the mat (for carrying) would have been nice.Read more

I was very excited to try this mat. I love the concept of a moisture wicking mat that is machine washable and for the most part it does what it says.. but has some flaws. So the feel of the mat is not what I am typically used to, it does feel more like a towel and I felt that the material did not help some when doing a few poses.. not like a regular “sticky” type mat would. The thickness could definitely be improved upon. It was not as comfortable as I am used to, but overall it didn’t feel horrible.. but I do like extra cushion feel. At home I lay this mat on top of another and this definitely helps, but I won’t take two mats to a studio.I really love being able to throw this in the washing machine. I was afraid that it would leave a smell, but honestly I’ve washed it twice already and it smells great and I have had zero deterioration of the mat. I was so worried about potential bacteria being trapped, but it really exceeded my expectations in the cleaning area.Overall I think it’s a 3.5 but rounded to 4, because this is an entirely new product that most people haven’t ever used. I think the practice I have evolved over time is used to a traditional type of mat.. however this new product while it has some quirks definitely has a some pros as well.Read more

I’m torn on this mat. So I know the first descriptor here is about its usage for hot yoga. But it also speaks a lot to the “ultimate grip” it offers – this is something I struggle with when I do yoga, and that is why I buy it. My review does not reflect usage during hot yoga.Pros- The grip is a little better than your typical TPE or PVC mat, though not by much- Machine washable – though frankly that seems like a necessity given the towel-like top- Pattern is very nice to look at- The bottom of the mat is typical yoga mat material, so it’s quite ‘sticky’Cons- Thin – I could actually feel pain in my tailbone when doing moves on my butt- Gets dirty very easily- No carrying strap – though I imagine most of us who do yoga have a few of them lying aroundIn summary, I thought it was okay, but probably would try something else the next time I’m in the market for a mat.Read more

I’m not a yoga mat expert, but this Gaiam Yoga Mat seems really nice, in some ways nicer than the other two brands I recently got. It’s really thick and comfy, and the top is woven. It seems a nice size that will help us with our exercise routine or yoga if we ever get that brave. Very pleased. I hadn’t realized until I got this that true yoga mats must be different than exercise mats, but I think it makes it even better. As the parent of kiddos with autism, there are causes near and dear to my heart. I have several Gaiam yoga mats, and this one is my least favorite. It somehow feels thinner than my 4 mm mats, which makes no sense given its 5 mm thickness. The topcoat does wick moisture and is only slightly more slippery than a regular mat.But what I like least is that it buckles and moves around throughout my practice, requiring me to readjustment it between poses. For example, if I move from pigeon to mermaid, I end up with a fold of the mat under my back leg. Then moving out of mermaid into tabletop (again, for example), it shifts again unless I manually move it back in place. I’ve never had a mat move around this much, and it’s really distracting. Maybe it would behave better on hardwood, but that’s not an option for me – and doesn’t have to be with any other mat I’ve used. I can’t recommend this one.Read more
